Daveluy
Printing and Lithography by Edouard Daveluy (1812-1894).
Originally from Ghent, Edouard Daveluy settled in Bruges in 1835 to establish a lithographic business. His printing in gold and color earned him the title of 'lithographer to the king'. He also distinguished himself and his products at many national and international exhibitions. In 1847, he obtained a patent for his new system of printing playing cards. With these playing cards, he penetrated the international market: the Netherlands, England and their respective colonies, France, and Switzerland.
From 1848 to 1884, he was also the printer-publisher of the local newspaper L'Indicateur de Bruges et de la Province. This company also engaged in photography. Daveluy's studio, located along the Groene Rei, employed about 42 workers around 1850. Several lithographers worked for Daveluy, who later established themselves independently, such as Ed. De Laey (1816-1857). The entrepreneurial spirit of Ed. Daveluy was underscored by opening branches in Ostend and Blankenberge.
